Acquiring Customers in a Fintech Startup – How to Build Trust in a World of Money and Regulation

Starting a fintech venture is an exciting experience—but also one of the most challenging missions you can take on. Because in a world where money meets regulation, there's no room for error. And the biggest challenge of all? Getting customers to trust you from day one.

As the founder of V-CHECK, where we onboarded no less than 40,000 business and personal customers, I know how tough it is to launch with a groundbreaking idea while still needing to convince the world it's necessary—or even understandable.

In the early days, no one really understood what a "digital check" was—and we often struggled to explain it properly. Customers asked all sorts of questions like: Is there any paper involved? Can I take it to court for enforcement? Do banks treat it as collateral?

So how do you succeed anyway? Here are some methods I discovered along the way—all revolving around the most critical currency in fintech: trust.

🚪 Door to Door – Understanding the Field

I started the simplest way possible: visiting businesses, knocking on doors, and presenting our product. It wasn't easy, but within a year, I managed to sign up 1,200 customers. Not a jaw-dropping number—but the insights I gained were worth gold. I learned how customers think, what scares them, and how to talk about money in a way that calms rather than stresses. I carried these lessons with me into every marketing channel that followed.

☎️ Cold Calling? Doesn't Work So Well in Fintech

I also tried telemarketing—thousands of cold calls to potential customers. But unlike e-commerce or service industries, when it comes to money, no one closes a deal on the phone with someone they don't know or trust. A key takeaway: fintech and payments aren't about pushy sales—they're about relationships.

📢 Campaigns That Speak to Pain – Not to Profit

Digital advertising. Like everyone, I started with headlines like "Save on fees" and "More money in less time"—but it just didn't work. In fact, it pushed people away. What did work? Speaking to real emotions. Addressing true pain points. "Another end of the month, and you're sending drivers to collect payments?" "Cash flow stress because checks got stuck in the mail? We've been there." "Still waiting for that wire transfer—every single time?" These messages made the difference—because people don't want to be sold to. They want to be understood.

🤝 Partnerships Built on Trust

One of the most effective methods I found was working with partners—but only the kind with serious credibility. Great partners talk about you even when you're not in the room. That's why you need to equip them: with decks, scripts, clear agreements—and above all, a consistent message. Don't collaborate with just anyone offering "exposure." In fintech and regulation, there's no room for gambling. Stick with certified advisors, industry influencers, and people who speak your customers' language.

💬 Word of Mouth – The Most Powerful Marketing Tool

Our real breakthrough came when customers started talking about us. Why? Because the product delivered real value, our service was personal, we solved problems fast, and we spoke their language. When a customer feels secure—they become your best marketing channel. But don't just hope for it to happen—encourage sharing, offer incentives, and constantly ask for feedback.

✍️ Content = Trust

Once I started writing about payments and posting short videos on how to avoid mistakes and save frustration—I started getting inquiries from people who simply wanted someone to explain this world to them. Don't try to "sell" through content—try to help. When people feel they got real value, they'll remember you when it's time to choose a solution.

Bottom Line – You Don't Acquire Trust. You Build It.

Fintech is a sensitive field. Customers aren't looking for a quick fix—they're looking for security, professionalism, and credibility. Every marketing effort, every post, every email—should radiate transparency, responsibility, and a true understanding of your customer's world.

If you're building a financial venture, or struggling with customer acquisition, product strategy, or trust-building—I'd be happy to chat.
